The Problem
Many homeowners concern themselves with the annoyance, or danger of mosquitoes that always seem to be around their yards. During the warm seasons of the year, many strive towards a solution to this problem, but may feel uncomfortable using chemicals to treat their mosquitoes as their yards are going to be used by their family, specifically, children and pets.
Fortunately, the intention of this article is to shed some light on the ethics of using specific treatment chemicals on your property. Concerns such as how it will affect the environment around your area and whether or not the products are safe for pets and for children going outside to play in your yard will be addressed.
There are a wide variety of products that can be used to effectively treat a property, and it’s important to be informed on how these products work and what they are specifically doing once applied. The product being discussed is Bifenthrin I/T.
Chemical Information
Bifenthrin I/T is the most common chemical used to treat a large majority of properties for mosquitoes. So, this will be the most important treatment to discuss as this is what many of those planning on getting a treatment for their property should expect.
Environmental Affect
The first thing to address is the environmental affect the treatment has or the lack thereof. It’s important to realize that this treatment is not an extermination, rather it is a control. This means that the mosquito population is going to be regulated, not completely eliminated.
While they will no longer show up on your property, this will not have any meaningful impact on insect population for the animals around your area. Because it is a control, if treatment is ever discontinued, mosquitoes will come right back to inhabiting your property.
Functionality
The next thing to address is the functionality of Bifenthrin I/T. The chemical is put into a mixture with water, and is applied through a mist of small droplets sprayed into the air.
This mist is applied to all of the bushes, trees, and other plant life on your property creating an exterior barrier protecting any mosquitoes from entering your yard. It is also sprayed on the walls of your house and surrounding area near your house to add an extra layer of protection.
After a treatment of Bifenthrin I/T is applied, it will last three weeks to one month depending on the property of a mosquito free yard. This means that to continue to have the same result of zero mosquitoes in your yard, you will need to continuously have your yard treated with the chemical at least once per month during the warm seasons of the year.
Chemical Safety
Most importantly, the safety of Bifenthrin I/T needs to be addressed for your pets and children. This chemical is 100% safe for your pets and children if some very simple protocols are followed during and after treatment.
The convenience of this chemical is that because it is applied to a property in the form of a mist rather than a gas, it is a lot safer because it settles on objects rather than floating around in the air.
The chemical sticks to everything it is applied onto, within seconds of being sprayed. After it is applied, it takes a required 30 minutes of dry time before it is safe for everyone to go back outside. Our business usually suggests 45-60 minutes depending on the weather to be safe, but the legal requirement is 30 minutes.
Once Bifenthrin I/T has dried post treatment, both pets and children are safe to go outside and enjoy the yard. This means that as long as everyone stays inside during treatment, and directly after for dry time, they are safe to go outside.
You are free to go outside immediately after treatment, as long as it is to go to your car, or something quick. The reason there is a dry time is because children and pets like to play on the grass, and this could be hazardous to them. Because the product is not airborne, you can safely walk off the property, or to your car.
This information is meant to be informative of the common questions that are asked about our treatment of Bifenthrin I/T. Hopefully, it addresses any concerns you may have about the product, and allows you to feel more comfortable in making a decision on starting a mosquito control treatment for your family’s outdoor space.
